How to Accept that Body Positivity is for You

I think the biggest misconception about body positivity is that it’s for a certain type of body. I have had so many women of all shapes and sizes message me saying that they feel like it’s not for them or that they don’t feel like they can promote it or be part of it because they’re not fat. And this tells me that something is going wrong and that we need to check ourselves and make sure that we’re including everyBODY. I understand that the movement is predominantly promoted by fat people but that’s all the more reason why we need you! We need to spread the love to all…

    Dear Body Shamer

I wish you would think, I wish you would think before you say something about somebody else’s appearance. I wish you would think about how deeply the words you say can hurt and impact someone else. I wish you would think about how you would feel hearing those words that are on the tip of your tongue. I wish you would imagine the anger and pain you would feel if your child looked into your eyes with tears in theirs because someone has body shamed them. We all look in the mirror and more often than not don’t like what we see. We find the smallest things to critique. We…

Is my body positivity an excuse for being unhealthy?

This is a topic that is always flying around and everyone has their own opinion about whether or not body positivity actually promotes an unhealthy lifestyle because it is an “excuse” being labelled as a movement. I thought I would touch on this from my point of view and my journey (mine only). This is not to say that anyone on their own journeys, whatever they might be, is right or wrong because our journeys are personal, and that’s kind of the point of this post. It is no secret that I have lost and gained and lost and gained a lot of weight. I have tried everything, I have…

Are we brave for showing off our big bodies?

We’ve all seen it – the fat girl in her bikini on the beach, the new mom showing off her postpartum body with the fresh stretchmarks, and the curvy girl “daring” to wear a crop top that shows off her chubby tummy. More often than not our first thoughts are “she’s brave” but I want to discuss why this is not the praise we should be thinking or giving. Obviously one of the big reasons that we see showing off our bumpy bodies as bravery is because the concept of accepting and appreciating diverse bodies is still pretty new to us, even though the fat acceptance and body positive movements…

When Body Hate became Body Love

I asked on Instagram what you wanted to know about body positivity so that I could put together a blog post answering all your questions. I was honestly blown away by the responses because they weren’t the usual and weren’t at all what I expected which is great because not only do I have some really interesting questions to answer but I’ve had to really think about a lot of things. One of the questions was “can you remember the day or moment when the switch flipped” and I felt like I needed to dedicate a full post to this just because I have so much to say about it.…
