My journey started by following the body positivity movement and from this I learnt a few ways to really start appreciating my body. By making a conscious effort to start embracing myself I got to the place that I am now – which is feeling comfortable in my own skin, not looking at my body with absolute disgust, feeling more free than I ever have and finally learning to live my life confidently.
I can’t promise that everyone will accept you or that this journey will be easy, but I can promise that practicing body positivity is worth it and it will help your self-love increase by leaps and bounds.
Small changes can lead to big progress so here are some ways to start.
Comparison is the thief of joy
We all know this, however we still put ourselves through the torture of comparison. Stop scrolling through the Instagram feed of someone else and admiring their body and start appreciating your own. No matter how hard you try you will never look like someone else so own your looks and body because they are unique.
You are worthy of love right now
No matter where you are in life, you are loveable right here and now. Self-love shouldn’t be number or size dependent.
Drop the expectations
There is no right or wrong to have a body and the sooner you realise that, the sooner your life can change.
Surround yourself with positivity
If it doesn’t make you feel good then you don’t need it.
Forget the fashion rules
You don’t have to live by any set of rules – if you want to wear stripes, do it, if you want to wear a crop top then rock it. Wear what you feel good in and what makes you feel comfortable.
Focus on what you love
Stop looking for faults and start focusing on what you love about your body. The good will always outweigh the bad and if you shift your mindset you will learn how to appreciate your whole body.
There are so many books, Instagram accounts and communities that will help you realise you are not alone and that with some work you can actually get to a point where you can love every inch of yourself. There are millions who are doing it and they can help you do it too.
Practice self care
This goes way deeper than taking a leisurely bath. Take the time to assess your mental health, what makes you happy, what makes you unhappy. Walk away from people that bring you down. Do more of what sets your soul on fire. Rest more, put yourself first often.
Don’t be afraid to feel yourself
If you’re feeling good, take that selfie. If you love your outfit, capture it. You are allowed to feel good and you are allowed to celebrate that feeling however you want to. After years of feeling bad about yourself, you deserve to love yourself completely and share that with the world.
These are just a few of the ways to get your started on a journey of self-love. What tips do you have?
